PROGRAM NOTE

Religious ikons are powerful expressions of faith, imbued with symbols and meanings that outweigh their often humble nature. But is it possible to create music that mimics this mostly visual medium? In this Ikonic Mass, every movement is based upon the simplest of ideas: short recurring motives that act as musical ikons. Each movement begins with and then dwells repetitively upon its simple idea. The result, of course, is much richer than the idea itself, and is meant to praise the flowering of profundity that can result from the mindful contemplation of simplicity.
